Formerly called SeptFest, The Substation has rebranded its annual multi-disciplinary arts festival for 2023 as “Re-connect/Centre/Converge: The Arts Festival.” This article explores the festival’s new name and location.
Reuniting at Parklane Shopping Mall
After losing its former space at 45 Armenian Street in 2022, The Substation’s festival had to disperse across different locations. However, for the 2023 edition, curator John Tung has chosen to bring the festival back together under one roof, at the top of Parklane Shopping Mall.
Embracing Conversations Over Food
Food takes center stage at the festival, with various culinary experiences planned. Attendees can join a tea ceremony with ceramist Kim Whye Kee or engage in food-sharing conversations with artist Adeline Kueh. Additionally, there will be poetry readings by Ang Kia Yee, Marc Nair, and Susie Lingham.
Hands-On Workshops and Guerrilla Gardening
For those seeking more interactive experiences, Bridget Tay will conduct a mini sculpture workshop, and artist Joshua Kon will introduce participants to guerrilla gardening.
Climate Change Plays at The Wright Stuff Festival 2023
The Wright Stuff Festival 2023 features three new plays addressing climate change, mentored by seasoned theatremakers. Rachel Chin’s “The Thieves,” Vivian Quek’s “Anthropocene,” and Annie Low’s “The Prisoner” explore environmental themes and fashion trends.
Exploring Moral Dilemmas with “Hangman”
Bilingual theatre company Avant Theatre presents “Hangman,” a production that delves into the moral complexities of execution. This interactive play combines dark comedy and audience participation, allowing the audience to make moral decisions for the characters.
Empowering the Audience
Director G. Selva emphasizes that “Hangman” aims to empower the audience to actively engage with the content and prompt societal change. The play will be performed in both Tamil and English on specific days.
